The Copernicus Marine Service provides several Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to have access to its products and the related metadata:

HTTPs - MOTU API

There are two MOTU features, Subsetter and Direct Get File, each with its advantages and both available using any http(s) library/client consuming the MOTU API.

The official MOTU clients available to users are:

  • a Python version
  • and a Java version

In both cases, it is a basic script which integrates the MOTU API and allows the interaction with the Copernicus Marine Database.

The download is free and the authentication requires Copernicus Marine username and password (available for free here).

Copernicus Pro Tips: For the python users, make sure you have the necessary requirements !

But if you do not want to use python at all, see examples with http tools (such as cURL, Wget etc...).

HTTPs - WMS API

It is a Web Map Service (WMS) whose objective is to define an HTTP interface for requesting georeferenced map images from Copernicus Marine servers.
Here, the authentication isn't required.

Copernicus Pro Tips: Our WebGIS tools (MyOcean Viewer and Pretty View) are consuming only Copernicus Marine WMS endpoints to display layers!

HTTPs - WCS API

The full support of the Web Coverage Service (WCS) is something that our technical team are working on but there is no date in the roadmap yet.

To upvote this feature and be part of the beta-testing phase, feel free to reach us out!

Copernicus Pro Tips: Read more about examples of the Copernicus Marine WCS implementation.

HTTPs - ERDDAP API

Coming soon

HTTPs - OPeNDAP API

The release of the OPeNDAP to all Copernicus Marine Users is planned for December 2021.

Copernicus Pro Tips: Read more in the dedicated section to discover, e.g. how to open and manipulate a dataset using the Copernicus Marine OPeNDAP endpoint.

HTTPs - CSW API

The Catalogue Service for the Web (CSW) whose objective is to discover the Copernicus Marine Catalogue, its products, datasets and web services, is available from this endpoint:

https://cmems-catalog-ro.cls.fr/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw-MYOCEAN-CORE-PRODUCTS

Copernicus Pro Tips: To get more details, feel free to read the article demonstrating how to consume the Copernicus Marine CSW endpoint.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol

CMEMS products can also be downloaded through a FTP server.
They are hosted on two FTP servers:

for respectively ocean information from the past and from the present & future.
